Coastal Martha’s Vineyard Wedding at the Harbor View Hotel

Martha's Vineyard wedding at the Harbor View Hotel

You may remember this couple from their Martha’s Vineyard engagement session. Together with their loved ones, they returned to the island to tie the knot at the iconic Harbor View Hotel (fun fact: I was also married there!). More than just a scenic destination, Martha’s Vineyard felt like a homecoming. The groom has family ties to the island, and both have spent meaningful time there together over the years.

The weekend began with an elegant rehearsal dinner at Atria and unfolded amid expansive coastal views and the scent of freshly bloomed flowers mingling with sea salt. I was so grateful for the opportunity to capture it, especially since this remains one of my favorite weddings to date.

Prioritizing Presence: The Photography Timeline

This couple was incredibly detail-oriented. They wanted their day documented thoroughly and beautifully, while also maximizing their time with guests. Working closely with their planner, Sandy of Timeless Event Planning, we crafted a timeline that thoughtfully balanced both priorities.

They chose to do a first look just outside the Harbor View Hotel, which allowed us to complete all portraits—couple, family, and wedding party—before the ceremony. As a result, once the ceremony concluded, they could move straight into enjoying the festivities with their guests.

That emphasis on connection carried into the reception design as well. Instead of a traditional seated dinner, the couple opted for appetizers and station-style dining, encouraging guests to mingle, dance, and move freely throughout the evening. It created a lively, dynamic atmosphere where quality time with loved ones remained at the heart of the experience.

A brief rain shower during dinner initially threatened our golden-hour portrait plans. Thankfully, it passed just in time. Before the celebration transitioned from the tent into the hotel, we slipped out for a few portraits with the Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse as our backdrop.

Ceremony at Saint Elizabeth’s & a Second Line Parade

Saint Elizabeth’s, a historic church in Edgartown known for its picturesque white facade and bell tower, served as the setting for the couple’s vows. With the Harbor View Hotel just a short walk away, the couple turned the transition between ceremony and reception into an experience of its own.

They brought in a brass band to lead a New Orleans–style second line parade, processing through town alongside their wedding party and guests. It was one of the most memorable moments of the day, and the perfect way to build celebratory energy heading into the reception.

Coastal Reception at the Harbor View Hotel

The reception unfolded in two parts, beginning in a sailcloth tent before moving inside the Harbor View Hotel later in the evening. With a keen eye for design and guidance from their planner, the couple transformed the tent into a refined interpretation of “summer on the Vineyard.”

A soft palette of tans, blues, and whites echoed the coastal surroundings, complemented by organic textures in the lounge furniture, rugs, and woven pendants. Patterned linens and vibrant florals added depth and personality, grounding the aesthetic in the couple’s New England roots.

Guests were encouraged to embrace color and pattern in their attire—and they delivered. Capturing both the thoughtfully curated details and the expressive fashion choices was a highlight of the evening for me.

Since my own wedding at the Harbor View Hotel, I’ve had the honor of documenting several celebrations there. Each time, it’s a joy not only to return to Edgartown but to see how each couple uniquely transforms the space.

Whether you’re planning a coastal celebration like this couple or a stylish Boston affair, I would love to photograph your New England wedding. My approach blends thoughtful preparation with an intuitive eye for meaningful moments, resulting in heartfelt images that become lasting keepsakes. Interested in learning more?
